One of the ancient races, the Borks are the strongest race- both in will and body. Renowned for their delicious recipes and unmatched hospitality, most borks prefer simple and fulfilling lives to the fast paced and competitive lives many others lead in this changing world.
Despite their reputation, many of the smaller races have unfair fears and reservations towards borks for their generally imposing appearance.
Physical Description
Borks are the largest of the humanoid races, ranging in height from 5-8 feet tall fully grown. Their bodies are sturdy- their bones heavier and more difficult to break than that of humans, to help support the amount of muscle and fat their bodies tend to retain.
Their hands each have five fingers, tipped with thick claw like nails. Their feet end in a cleft hoof, these two main toes are separated by an interdigital cleft. These toes, like nails, need to be trimmed regularly for comfort. The heel of the foot is similar to that of a human’s foot.
Skin tones for borks range from light pinks to deep, desaturated greens, and the browns in between. They have wider, sometimes flatter almost snout-like noses that have a pink tone. They have smallish pointed ears with a pink toned inner membrane. Their ears are floppy when born, and occasionally stay that way into adulthood.
For both male and female borks, their hair grows thick, and in many areas of the body. They have what we consider to be a natural range of hair colors. Female borks tend to be slightly smaller than males but both have potential to grow tusks.
Borks are born very small and grow rapidly through childhood, creating quite the reputation for toddler borks to be very fussy and troublesome. Baby borks are born fuzzy and with soft toes, not yet hardened by age. They have stripes in their fur that will eventually disappear as they age, losing your stripes is a right of passage, at around 10 years old.
Borks have a shorter average lifespan than most races- they reach full maturity around age 13 and very few live past age 60, about equivalent to a human’s 80- 90.
Range and Population
After humans, borks are one of the more widespread races. They don’t usually gather in dense populations, small mostly familiar groups may stick together. There’s the nomadic borks of the Ceatta Steppe, a notable population of borks in Dica, and the largest gathering of borks reside in Misty Ash Swamp. The odd bork can be found just about anywhere in Sibyl.
Culture
In bork culture, their main thing is hospitality. Though they tend to live in small groups, that is not to say they are unwelcoming of outsiders. They will make large meals to commemorate just about anything- they offer guests large portions, seconds, even some for the road!
Food is a universal language to the borks and for good reason, most of the best cooks in all of Sibyl are borks! Their recipes are long passed down between generations, and though they share food, many family recipes are kept close to the chest.
Their connection to food comes from the borks' heightened sense of smell and incredible palate. They can sense the subtlest nuances of flavors that other races will never begin to comprehend.
Though they make delicious food, always be wary of anything made by borks. Due to their resistance to poisons and venom, some chefs utilize dangerous roots, fruits, flowers, etc.. in their foods as they believe the flavors they produce are like none other! They are, however, aware of the risk and always willing to accommodate guests.
Though it’s a faux pas to ask the exact ingredients of a dish, there’s never fear of being shunned for inquiring about a potentially dangerous ingredient or allergy!
They have a family forward culture, where large families tend to stick together- when of age the children venture out to start their own families where they have the choice to begin their own tribe, join someone else’s, or return to their parents with their new spouse. Some stay single and “marry” the family group itself. A promise of dedication to family, to take care of the old, young, and sick.
Though their concept of marriage is different from that of humans- it’s more akin to a promise than a legal document - they take it very seriously and tend to stick with one spouse through their lives, should they wed.
As far as religion goes, borks worship the familial unit, those current and those passed. Many bork groups construct elaborate shrines, nomadic borks usually have shrines that can be broken down and moved though, rarely, some nomadic tribes carry handheld personal shrines.
